What is Expanded Learning?

Expanded learning refers to all before-school, after-school, summer, or intersession programs that may happen on or off of a school campus, and it is often referred to as out-of-school time (OST), enrichment, or extracurriculars.

Youth from marginalized communities have the greatest need for these programs but are least likely to have access.

Expand LA supports, connects, and advocates for LA’s youth learning opportunities.

ExpandLA will transform the expanded learning landscape to create opportunities for all LA youth, especially those from historically marginalized communities, to access high-quality expanded learning programs by serving 3 key roles for the expanded learning sector:

Support

We will equip expanded learning providers with resources, knowledge, and capacity building to strengthen programs that yield positive outcomes for youth.

Connect

We will build systems and provider capacity to create a strong collaborative network of program providers and to effectively connect families and youth to expanded learning programs.

Advocate

We will represent the collective voice of program providers and will strengthen advocacy efforts of the expanded learning sector to address gaps in the field, ensure equitable access to funding, and ignite widespread support for expanded learning.

ExpandLA has arrived right on time. Public investments in OST coupled with foundational collaborative efforts over the last few years among agencies, funders, and schools means that ExpandLA, can capitalize on this momentum and maximize impact for Angeleno youth.

Funding has been inadequate to support quality classes, programs, and services for low-income communities and communities of color. Too often providers are left out of the room when decision-making happens. ExpandLA unites youth development programs with school districts, policy makers, and philanthropists to address the educational equity that exists throughout LA County.

Tony Brown, CEO Heart of Los Angeles

The importance and critical timing of ExpandLA cannot be underestimated. There is a huge need for an ecosystem that coordinates equitable access to funding, technical support, data collection, messaging, and access to quality programming. ExpandLA will be the difference in creating high-quality OST choices for families in LA.
